General Policies

Campus Closing Time: Campus is officially closed to all visitors at dusk or 7pm, whichever occurs later. At this time, please make your way to your vehicle and depart from campus. Visitor access to campus after hours is strictly prohibited unless attending a program or event that runs past campus closing.

Building Access: Although the Cranbrook Institute of Science, Art Museum, Wallace Ice Arena & Natatorium are generally open to the public, all other buildings on campus are closed to the public and require an escort and/or proper approval to enter.

Drugs & Alcohol – Cranbrook prohibits the use, possession, sale, distribution, or manufacture of controlled substances or alcohol on Cranbrook property.

Alcohol is permitted as part of approved campus events in compliance with city and state regulations or in Private Residential Units.

Weapons Policy: Weapons of any kind, including, but not limited to guns, knives, mace, explosives, hazardous devices or substances are prohibited.

Photography – Professional photography is allowed when scheduled through Cranbrook’s Business Services Office. Non-scheduled professional photography is strictly prohibited. Tripods, flash, and other photography equipment are not allowed. For more information on Cranbrook's photography policy, please click here.

For the safety and security of our faculty, staff and students, we do not currently allow aerial photographs (drones) over our campus. Furthermore, photography of any kind is not permitted near academic buildings, residential units, or dormitories.

Events: Events, weddings, engagements and ceremonies of any kind are not permitted without prior authorization from the Events Department at events@cranbrook.edu or 248.645.3164.

Drone – Drones are not permitted on campus, unless they are a member of the Cranbrook Drone Club. Drones are to only be used during club hours. Drones are never allowed near residential areas of campus.

Fireworks: Fireworks are prohibited on campus.

Skateboarding - Skateboarding is not allowed.

Fishing/Swimming/Canoeing – Fishing, swimming, and canoeing is prohibited in all lakes, ponds and fountains on campus.

Sledding/Snowboarding - Sledding/snowboarding is prohibited everywhere on campus.

Shirt Policy - Shirts are always required by residents and visitors, even when exercising. Individuals who cannot produce a shirt will be asked to leave campus.

Leash Policy - All dogs are required to be on a leash while on campus. Dog owners will be asked to leave campus if they cannot produce a leash. The leash policy is a Bloomfield Hills ordinance.

Picnicking/Sunbathing - is prohibited on Campus.
