Research Services

PERMISSION TO EXAMINE
Permission to examine archival materials will be granted to qualified individuals upon completion of the registration form or--for Cranbrook students, faculty, and staff--upon presentation of a valid Cranbrook library card. Such permission is granted subject to any restrictions placed on access to specific holdings by their creators, donors or depositors, or by the Archivist. In certain cases, researchers may be required to use microfilm or printed copies of manuscripts when such copies are available. Researchers may not use any documents or information included in or provided by the Archives for any illegal purpose or in any illegal manner.

PROTECTION OF MATERIALS
Researchers are required to leave coats, hats, brief cases, notebooks, and all other personal property not essential to their research outside the reading room. Researchers are also responsible for safeguarding all materials made available to them in the reading room. Researchers may not remove materials from the reading room for any purpose or rearrange the order of any archival materials. Researchers may use pencil or pen to take personal notes; however, researchers may not write on, lean on, fold anew, or trace archival materials, nor may they handle them in any way that would inflict damage. Eating, drinking, and smoking are prohibited in the reading room at all times.

PERMISSION TO PUBLISH
Permission to examine materials does not constitute an authorization to publish or display them in whole or in part. Requests for permission to publish or display documents and other materials held by the Archives, or facsimiles thereof, should be addressed to the Archivist. Written requests should include the following: name of individual, sponsoring agency or institution (if applicable), position of individual (if applicable), address, telephone number, a description of the materials, purpose for which materials are to be used in publication or exhibition, and a date for the proposed publication or exhibition. The Archivist will determine in each case whether Cranbrook Educational Community holds copyright to the materials concerned. The granting of permission to publish or display materials from the archive's collections is at the discretion of the Archivist. Dissertations and theses are considered published works.

ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
All permission to publish or display material from the Archives is contingent upon the inclusion of the credit line "Courtesy of Cranbrook Archives" with each instance of publication or display. For published works, the Archives requests that a free copy of the work be presented upon publication.

COPYRIGHT
In giving permission to publish material from its archival collections, Cranbrook Educational Community does not surrender its own right thereafter to publish or to grant permission to others to publish that material. In all cases where permission to publish or display collection material is granted by Cranbrook Educational Community, adherence to the stipulations of the copyright law of the United States remains the sole responsibility of the person(s) or institution(s) requesting permission to publish or display. Exclusive rights to examine or publish materials in the collections of Cranbrook Archives will not ordinarily be granted.

REPRODUCTION OF ARCHIVAL MATERIALS
In order to facilitate the mechanical aspects of conducting research, Cranbrook Archives will endeavor to provide reproductions of a reasonable amount of materials from its holdings. Each request for reproduction will be considered in light of available staff time and the condition of the material reproduced; in all cases, reproduction is a service made available to researchers at the discretion of the Archivist. The appropriate options for methods of reproduction will also be determined solely by the Director of Archives or the Archivist, and the Director reserves the right at all times to refuse reproduction requests or to limit the amount of material to be copied. In all cases, the fees for reproduction services will cover both labor and materials and will be non- refundable. A researcher's signature on a reproduction services request form constitutes an agreement to pay for the services requested. Though the staff of Cranbrook Archives will do its best to help researchers estimate the cost of reproductions, the final cost for reproductions cannot be guaranteed in advance. The Archives reserves the right to request the return of reproductions made available to researchers. Reproductions of materials from the collections of Cranbrook Archives may not be loaned, sold, or donated to other institutions or individuals without written permission from the Director of Archives.

RESTRICTIONS
Restrictions on access to materials held by the Cranbrook Archives my be imposed by law, by donors or depositors of collections, by divisional agency heads within Cranbrook Educational Community, or by an action of the Board of Trustees. Restricted material may be examined only under the terms of access stipulated by such restrictions.
